I’m Barber Dan and I’m living the dream! I guess you can say I love what I do.
Since I was in college, I’ve been cutting hair. Back in the dorm at Liberty University I gave haircuts for extra spending money so I could take my girlfriend, now my wife, out on the town. At Liberty I earned a bachelor’s degree in religion and then realized “What do you do with a degree in religion?” Needless to say, I needed a job, so I started substitute teaching in the inner-city of Lynchburg, Virginia. I found that I really connected with the kids and decided to pursue a master’s degree in Special Education. I then came back to my hometown of North Industry (Canton South) and became a school administrator. This eventually led to a position as Vice Principal and Athletic Director in Doylestown School District. My friends said I had it all! A great job, a beautiful wife, two great
kids, supportive parents…and hey, they were right! But something was still missing. Something kept calling me. As I climbed my way up the career ladder, my workdays grew longer, job-related stress mounted, and I longed for a creative outlet. Worst of all, I was never home with my family.
My wife could tell I was stressed, that I needed a change. That’s when she suggested I look into Barber School. “Are you crazy!?!” I said. “Do you know how much barbers make? Financially, we can’t afford it.” She said she didn’t care. That my health and our family was worth more than anything else. She wanted me to be happy. “Give it a try”, she said. “What do you have to lose? Besides, you’re good at cutting hair.”
So, that settled it. I was off to Akron Barber School and then I started on my second career as a barber. Has it been easy? Yes and no. I love what I do, so that’s worth its weight in gold! But I do miss the financial stability that comes with a school administrator’s position. And running a business is hard…very hard! My wife and I drive used cars and the family takes weekend vacations to Amish Country as opposed to Disney World. But it all works. And I am happy!
The folks that come in and get their haircut have become more than just customers, they are my friends. I have found out that every day I am able to laugh, listen, learn and sometimes give encouragement while I cut hair. Who knew that life could be so rich!
And yes, my wife was right! I am good at cutting hair. Come and see for yourself. I look forward to meeting you soon!
I’m Barber Dan. And I am Canton South for Life!
